The future of sausage roll production in Market Drayton has been secured thanks to the efforts of a leading food manufacturer to cut the fat from its factory operations. Multi award winning firm, Pork Farms has saved nearly £18,000 after reviewing its manual handling requirements with the help of a leading distributor of fork lift trucks, Cannock-based Briggs Equipment. Dave Bradley, supply chain manager at Pork Farms commented: “We’ve implemented a comprehensive programme of change to embrace the ‘lean’ manufacturing system. Working in the food industry, we are constantly driven by sell-by dates. We need to ensure that our distribution network runs smoothly and Briggs Equipment’s forklift trucks have helped us to do this.” At the forefront of Briggs’ solution is John Davis, its service engineer. After collaborating in a variety of roles for 20 years, Dave and John are working together to reduce the time spent on manoeuvring the products around the factory and in the process reducing costs. “If the trucks are not running or unreliable, the operation will fail,” says John Davis. “We therefore have our forklifts running on gas instead of electric. This eliminates the need to recharge batteries which immediately reduces the amount of breakdowns.” “After listening to Pork Farms’ needs and keeping in line with their lean manufacturing system, we were also able to reduce the fleet to seven machines saving them at least £18,000 over the contract,” continued John. Pork Farms operates out of four UK sites including, Market Drayton, Shaftsbury, Queensdrive and Riverside. Briggs runs a total fleet of 24 machines over these four sites. - - - ENDS - - - Images to accompany this release: click here
