Semta’s Skills Model Helps Sheffield Firm To Boost Profits

Sheffield-based JRI is planning to increase productivity, reduce costs, boost sales and increase profits after working with Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies. The hi-tech manufacturing firm that produces orthopaedic implants has adopted Semta’s Business 2 Skills Model to help it develop a company-wide training plan that is closely linked to JRI’s strategic objectives. Business 2 Skills enables companies to effectively plan knowledge and skills development and involves a thorough analysis of the environment in which the business operates. Explained Philip Whiteman, Semta Chief Executive: “Through this analysis businesses are able to identify any skills gaps as well as finding appropriate training solutions. “In the case of JRI, employees are now undertaking training in mechanical testing, statistical process control and supervisory management. Semta has also helped them to secure government funding for their development programme.” In addition, Semta’s National Skills Academy for Manufacturing (the Skills Academy) has helped the company to identify suitable training providers and it is now confident that it can become increasingly competitive in a difficult market. Commented Andrew Taylor, Compliance Manager at JRI: “We have always invested in a lot of training but Semta’s Business 2 Skills Model has helped us to plan more effectively, and to better measure the business benefits. “We intend to continue working with Semta and the Skills Academy on the introduction of bespoke training programmes to meet the individual training needs of our employees,” he added. Further information about the Business 2 Skills Model is available by contacting Semta on 0845 643 9001 or visiting the website at www.semta.org.uk. - E N D S –
