Grand Opening of Collards + Culture Exhibit at Sugar Creek Library
Collards + Culture is an emotionally moving, life-size installation that explores how Africans were brought to the Americas, enduring the inhumanity of the Middle Passage, and honors their courageous determination and culture.
The December 12 grand opening celebration will begin with a 4 p.m. tour of the exhibit, followed by 5 p.m. re-enactments, dancing, drumming and refreshments. The exhibit will be open to the public December 12-January 24: Monday-Thursday from 4-7 p.m. and Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Special hours available December 27-28 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Additional tours are available upon request.
Collards + Culture programs will also take place at Sugar Creek Library, University City Regional Library, Hickory Grove Library and Mallard Creek Rec Center. More information about the exhibit and programs can be found at cmlibrary.org/collardsandculture.
This program is part of the ASC Culture Blocks program, which supports art, science, history and heritage activities that are relevant to the community and take place closer to where Mecklenburg County residents live.
