Library responds to community needs, opening an hour earlier in January

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library will open an hour earlier across all 20 branches beginning in January.

This move is in response to customer feedback and comes after an analysis of current capacity throughout the system. While there were many requests for additional hours in the Library's 2015 customer satisfaction survey, additional morning hours were the most requested.

The Library will open its doors at 9 a.m. instead of 10 a.m., Monday-Saturday beginning Monday, January 4.

“Increasing access to library resources and services has been one of our top strategic priorities for the past few years,” said Library CEO Lee Keesler. “We are constantly seeking ways to increase users, usage and impact, and being open earlier for those that need us is just one more step toward that goal.”

Director of Libraries David Singleton said the hours increase will have a positive impact on the community. "Opening one hour earlier gives us more time to address customer requests and to increase the availability of early literacy programs and other services throughout the system. Seniors and other customers have also missed the earlier opening since reduced hours began in 2010."

While this does not completely restore the public service hours that were in place prior to 2010, it is another step in providing additional library access to the residents of Mecklenburg County.
