Leading Wisconsin clean energy provider reveals benefits of switching to clean, affordable propane

LANCASTER, Wis. – With heat waves across the nation causing record electricity usage, Wisconsin residents are looking to cut energy costs any way they can. It may be difficult to resist blasting your central air conditioning during the dog days of summer, but there are other ways to lessen energy costs in your home.

One increasingly popular option is to invest in energy-efficient appliances and heating systems that don’t require electricity, such as those that run on propane gas.

“When most folks think propane, they think of Fourth of July grilling. But it’s actually a clean source of energy with a multitude of uses than can save homeowners money in the long run,” says Douglas M. Pink, president and owner of Wisconsin propane retailer Charter Fuels. “Besides space heating, propane is a cost-effective fuel choice for many other everyday home energy needs, such as water heating, cooking, clothes drying and hearth inserts.”

Propane gas is a much more economical energy source than electricity for heating needs in homes and businesses. Propane costs about half as much per BTU as electricity on average, so gas appliances pay for themselves in a short time with money saved on energy expenses. Consumers also get more hot water from propane-powered water heaters because they recover twice as fast and cost about 30 percent less to operate than those powered by electricity.

“Not only does using propane for home and commercial energy needs save money, it’s better for the environment, too,” says Pink.

Nearly 50 percent of electricity in the United States is produced by coal-fired power plants. Coal emits more than twice the amount of carbon dioxide as propane per pound of fuel burned, so consumers reduce emissions and help the environment by using propane gas instead of electricity. And, because propane is a nontoxic, nonpoisonous fuel that doesn’t contaminate water or soil, large tanks can be buried underground to fuel homes. (source: www.propanecouncil.org)
