China’s NDRC visited Chempolis Biorefining Park

Report this content

A high-level delegation from China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) visited Chempolis Biorefining Park in Finland to get a hands-on experience of Chempolis’ formico® biorefining technologies and its recently commissioned biorefinery. The NDRC delegation regarded the possibilities for making wider use of Chempolis’ biorefining technologies in China very positive. Chempolis’ formico® biorefining technologies have been selected as one of the most promising new sustainable solutions by the NDRC and the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy.

The main purpose of the NDRC visit to Finland is to familiarize the delegation with Finnish technologies and solutions, as well as identify ways for intensifying and extending cooperation. Participants will be introduced to a number of top Finnish companies and research institutions in the environmental technology field.

Chempolis Ltd. is a leading-edge company supplying low-carbon, effluent-free, and energy self-sufficient biorefining technologies and production solutions for use in industry. The two key members of the Chempolis technology family are formicofib™, for producing high-quality non-wood papermaking fibre, and formicobio™, for producing non-food cellulosic bioethanol. Chempolis licenses these proprietary technologies and supplies key process systems, as well as customised plant engineering, procurement, and commissioning services.

At present, approximately 34% of the COD loading on Chinese waterways originates from non-wood pulping effluents. Non-wood pulping businesses also generate significant CO2 emissions due to their dependency on fossil fuels and their inefficient energy usage. More than 4 million tons of outdated non-wood pulp and paper capacity is due to be closed this year in China representing more than half of the total wheat straw pulping capacity in China. The Chinese government has also announced that it aims to increase non-food bioethanol production to 10 million t/a by 2020. Chempolis’ non-wood pulping and non-food ethanol technologies offer a sustainable solution for Chinese biomass-based industries.
