Aftermarket Parts range is too good for the OEMs to compete with

IAAF CV Chairman Darren Miller has sent a strong aftermarket message clear to the truck fleet managers.

The Society of Operational Engineers (formerly the Institute of Road Transport Engineers) asked the following question through their membership publication - How should fleet managers keep their costs down?

Darren Miller head of marketing at Unipart Group company Truck & Trailer Components (TTC) and also chairman of the IAAF’s Commercial Vehicle section has decided that the IAAF needs to stand up and voice a reply.

Miller commented, “I believe fleets increasingly focus on topics other than just price. They also take into account service and support and here, the independent aftermarket can compete and win against the OEMs by offering a comprehensive all-makes range.

“Fleets gain flexibility on a UK and European-wide platform,” Miller continued. “This continued choice through the independent aftermarket can only benefit commercial vehicle fleets by keeping the servicing costs low and ensuring vehicle downtime is reduced. The independent aftermarket offers truck operators a credible and viable alternative to the franchised dealer route.”

However, the published article, which the IAAF have replied to also contained warnings for all independent parts suppliers, namely, the resurgence of all-makes programmes from truck makers and their dealers. It highlighted,  a well known  OE who attempted to equate independent parts with low quality and counterfeiting; without any justification or evidence of the sources of their own other makes items. The IAAF know only too well that this is something the aftermarket needs to be aware of and react to whenever required.
