ENTREPID DUO HIT NEW HEIGHTS

After everyone has returned home and only the Spanish are still thinking of the World Cup, Nick Davies, managing director of Universal Automotive and Andy Walters, technical manager of Dayco UK will be heading down to Africa for a different kind of exercise, as they make an assault on Mount Kilimanjaro! The dynamic duo are now therefore undertaking some serious training to get into the physical shape to help them get through the gruelling challenge, which will include ascending and descending 5,895 metres. One of the dangers that can beset those mounting the challenge is altitude sickness from prolonged periods above 2,500 metres. The result can be mild symptoms of acute mountain sickness to the potentially fatal high altitude pulmonary or cerebral oedema. As well as the physical test of the venture, there is also a charitable dimension, as Andy will be raising money for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity. The charity is important to Andy because of the great work the hospital has done for many children, including one of Andy’s young neighbours, 13-year-old Nathan. Andy explains: “I’ve known Nathan for about seven years and he is undoubtedly the bravest person I know. He has remained cheerful and happy despite the severity of his health difficulties. “Having been wheelchair bound for much of his life the hospital recently undertook a major operation, which it was hoped would result in a big improvement in his condition. Thankfully, the operation was a great success and Nathan even walked out of hospital. “Kilimanjaro offers one of those ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ challenges that just have to be undertaken. It is a great opportunity to test myself physically and mentally, and to be able to help others by raising some money for the hospital in the process makes it all-the-more worthwhile.” The route will take Nick and Andy from the Londorossi Park Gate, located on the western side of Kilimanjaro, to the trailhead at Lemosho Glades where they will trek through the rainforest and on up into the moorland zone of the Shira Plateau. They will then traverse the south-western flank of Kilimanjaro, passing below the spectacular Western Breach, before attacking the southern ice fields on the way to the summit.
