Fix Auto Ruislip has recently gained the prestigious Kitemark certification in just eight months- setting the high standards that consumers and fleet managers expect when having their cars repaired. Founded by the Smith family in 1948, it is now run by David Smith who took over from his dad and has worked there for over 25 years. He has 12 staff and a bodyshop covering 8,000 sqft. This year David decided the bodyshop needed a major revamp in order to secure business and stay ahead if the game. Not all bodyshops are the same: To earn the Kitemark for Vehicle Body Repair shops must prove that they conform to tough new standards set down in PAS 125. These include strict requirements that focus on skills, repair methods, equipment and materials. In addition, workshops must demonstrate that they have repair process management controls in place to monitor activities. All these elements are then assessed by independent BSI inspectors and must meet stringent benchmarks to be awarded the valuable Kitemark by BSI. Therefore a motorist should always look for the Kitemark symbol when choosing a bodyshop. David commented: “This year, we have spent over £50,000 investing in to the company and gaining the Kitemark status. We needed to move with the times, so we ditched our cabins and now have a suitable reception for our customers. We needed to secure existing business with insurance and fleet companies to ensure we have a future. I am very proud of all the staff here; as they have worked hard toward gaining the Kitemark despite the upheaval while the revamp was going on this past year. “The Kitemark also brought greater cohesion to the team as we are all working to achieve a common goal. The Kitemark made us focus on all our processes as we are monitoring and measuring what we are doing. It makes you look again at all aspects of your business but there is nothing in the PAS 125 that is difficult.” Looking ahead, David is pleased with the businesses progress, especially in the past year- he intends to build on that success and would not rule out expanding the site.
