A lot of organizations talk about diversity, but at Per Scholas, we live it every day. We see it in our students, we see it among our faculty and staff, and we’re helping to drive diverse talent pipelines to our corporate employer partners. Research shows that diverse companies outperform those that aren’t, and we’re hopeful that Diverse by Design will continue to change the way we think about recruiting and hiring talent across corporate America.

There’s been a valuable ethos in this country about the importance of ‘reading, ’riting, and ‘rithmetic’ but our study makes it clear that we need to add relevance to that mix. Technology and engineering literacy is critical for all young people to lead successful lives and thrive in any career, regardless of field. In order to build that literacy, they must engage in activities that allow them to actually explore how technology and engineering are relevant to their everyday lives.

As the region’s leading pediatric health system, Children’s National touches the lives of nearly every child in our community. The Race for Every Child is the prime opportunity for our community to come together and support the health and well-being of our region’s children at a joyful event in the heart of our nation’s capital.

Our findings go against the assumption that America’s first generation of ‘digital natives’ are tech savvy. If we continue to leave young people to their own devices—quite literally—their low skills will become a dead weight on individual opportunity and American productivity. But there is a way to shift trajectory, and excellent STEM programs, both in and beyond schools, are showing the way forward.
