Say hooray for Chiquita bananas on World Food Day!

It’s World Food Day on 16 October, and the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, so it’s the perfect time to celebrate one of the world’s top five crops and one of its most popular fruits, the amazing banana.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day is ‘Grow, nourish, sustain. Together. Our actions are our future.’ The day celebrates the people who produce, plant, harvest, fish or transport our food and calls on the public to thank these #FoodHeroes who, whatever the circumstances, continue to provide food for their communities and beyond, helping to grow, nourish and sustain our world.

Chiquita bananas are a valuable food source in many countries during seasons when few other foods are available, as the banana plant produces its sunny yellow fruit all year round. This is particularly important for countries that do not produce many of their own food sources. Chiquita has also been supporting and providing much-needed food relief from its plantations through partnerships like Feeding America, as well as hospitals and school districts around the world.

Our bananas are not only tasty – they are also super healthy, low in sodium and crammed with important vitamins (especially vitamins C and B6), soluble fiber, and key minerals including potassium and magnesium. This makes them an important part of the global push for healthy eating.

Chiquita is also a worldwide leader in food sustainability and at the forefront of industry discussions on sustainable agriculture, and we work hard to ensure our plantations are as environmentally and socially beneficial as possible.

Bananas are one of the most sustainable foods available – at Chiquita, we look hard at every aspect of our business to see where we can reduce our carbon footprint and drive down our environmental impact. We have made huge progress in recent years, and we are continuing to improve all the time.

Bananas also form an important part of a plant-based diet and are the ideal food for anyone looking to ensure they are leading a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. Chiquita bananas have the best taste of all and top quality, so whatever your food preferences they make an excellent addition to your shopping basket.

They’re also incredibly versatile – grab a banana in its handy, tough yellow carry case as a snack on the go, make one part of a delicious breakfast or a healthy smoothie, or turn some into the star ingredient in a mouthwatering dessert.

We at Chiquita are proud to play our part as a company that believes in ‘grow, nourish, sustain and donate’ as fundamental aims, and we salute everyone in our company, our supply chain and beyond in their vital work to bring great, healthy food to the world.

About Us

Chiquita is the leading distributor of bananas in the United States. Our passion for doing well and giving back.We want Chiquita to be the banana of choice in every market we are in, providing our customers with the highest quality product and service. We want to create consistent value for the Chiquita Brand, our customers, suppliers, associates and the community whilst respecting the environment. We want to do so in the spirit of doing well and giving back, with respect for the environment and everyone involved in our business. Bananas love hot, humid climates. Chiquita bananas are grown primarily in the lowland areas of Latin America. Banana farms are labor intensive and our produce relies being in a temperature-controlled environment from the farms at which bananas are harvested all the way to a local grocery store, a journey that can cover thousands of miles. We asked ourselves how we could make each step in that journey an environmentally responsible one. Chiquita works under better than industry standard agricultural work practices for business, the environment, employees and the local communities. Chiquita was the pioneer promoting good farming practices in the 1990s to protect the environment and support farming communities. To guarantee we were following the strict environmental and social standards we had auditors and independent experts assessing our farms every year while having full access to all workplaces, documents and employees.
