The Church of Scientology Los Angeles hosted a drug education workshop July 20 to train drug counselors, gang interventionists, drug rehabilitation specialists and other community activists on the Truth About Drugs curriculum.

Among those attending were several who already use The Truth About Drugs curriculum in their work. A retired federal corrections officer who runs a teen intervention program in Compton shared his success with the materials. A Las Vegas educator finds the program helps teens to examine their attitudes about drugs by encouraging them to speak frankly of their own experiences.

One attendee traveled from Colorado to gain experience with the curriculum so she can share it with local school resource officers who will conduct drug education in her city’s schools.

The Truth About Drugs curriculum includes 13 drug education booklets; award-winning “They Said, They Lied” public service announcements ; The Truth About Drugs: Real People, Real Stories documentary, lesson plans, assignments and classroom activities that hold the attention of young people.

One attendee plans to take the program to South America by the end of the year. A parent liaison at an inner-city Los Angeles high school wants to provide Truth About Drugs workshops to students and their families. A community activist plans to implement the program in English and Spanish in East Los Angeles.

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”
