Reaching Out to Parents and Students with the Truth About Drugs

Volunteers from the Church of Scientology of Cincinnati set up a booth in the heart of the city at Fountain Square to reach returning students and their parents with factual information about drugs and drug abuse.

While clips from the award-winning documentary, Truth About Drugs—Real People, Real Stories, played on the Square’s big screen TV, volunteers distributed copies of The Truth About Drugs booklets and met and spoke with parents and children, answering questions throughout the afternoon.

Drug abuse continues as a severe problem in Ohio. The state attorney general announced in August that twice as many meth labs have been found this year as in 2011.

Teen drug and alcohol abuse is also a cause of concern. This year’s Partnership for a Drug-Free America Attitude Tracking Study found one in four teens has misused or abused a prescription drug at least once. According to a 2011 study by the U.S. Department and Health and Human Services Office of Adolescent Health, 24 percent of Ohio 9-12th-graders had recently had five or more drinks one after another, 21 percent had recently ridden in a car with a driver who had been drinking alcohol, and 47 percent have experimented at least once with marijuana.

Scientologists on five continents work in their communities throughout the year to empower others with the truth about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education.

The Church of Scientology supports the Truth About Drugs initiative, one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention campaigns and makes these materials available free of charge to educators, law enforcement and community programs.

It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.

The Church of Scientology has published a brochure, Scientology: How We Help—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports. To learn more or read the brochure, visit the Scientology website.

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”
