The System to Restore Blinking by Ciklum Biowave Labs’ Team won Gold Medal at the World Congress of Otology
The work about restoration of blinking for patients with damaged facial nerves has won the Politzer Prize and Gold Medal for Basic Science Research in Otology
KIEV, August 31, 2015 - In July, 2015 the 30th Politzer Society Meeting and the 1st World Congress of Otology awarded the most significant researches in the field of otology and neurotology in Niigata, Japan. The award-winning interdisciplinary team from Ukraine has united the Ciklum Biowave Labs, the Ukrainian Institute of Otolaryngology, Research and Manufacturing Private Enterprise WEL. The work about restoration of blinking for patients with damaged facial nerves has won the Politzer Prize and Gold Medal for Basic Science Research in Otology.
Andrii Bobrov from the Institute of Otolaryngology has presented the joint development “Implantable Bioelectrical System for Restoration of Blinking”. This is the implantable system to help patients with one-sided facial nerve paralysis. The system will restore blinking activity in the damaged part of the face where facial nerves are not able to force blinking anymore. It will consist of the implantable device to register the eyelid activity from the healthy eye (electromyograph), a digital signal processor chip for preprocessing and blinking detection, and neuro-myostimulator to force blinking in the eye on the damaged side of face.
The Politzer Society distinguishes every year the most promising researches in the field of otology and neurotology from all over the world. The meeting attracted over 700 participants from 50 countries with their recent findings in otology.
The work from Ukraine was done by the interdisciplinary team from medicine, academia, and engineering:
-
initial idea, experimental and clinical approbation - Andrii Bobrov, MD, Oleg Borysenko, MD, PhD, Institute of Otolaryngology, Department of ear microsurgery and otoneurosurgery (Kyiv, Ukraine);
-
circuit design, functional prototype development - Research and Manufacturing Private Enterprise WEL (Kyiv, Ukraine), headed by Sergii Shoferistov;
-
algorithms for data preprocessing and analysis, and method for blinking detection, as well as software development - Anton Popov, PhD, Yevgenii Karpliuk, PhD, Oleg Bodilovskyi and Oleg Panichev, the core of Ciklum Biowave Labs team from the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Department of Physical and Biomedical Electronics (Kyiv, Ukraine).

The Politzer Society
The Politzer Society is the International Society for Otologic Surgery and Science founded in 1970s and named after Adam Politzer, one of the pioneers and founders of otology. Every year the Society organizes a meeting to bring together up-and-coming researchers to present and discuss research results for the fields of otology and neurotology as well as award the most distinguishing works. The 30th Politzer Society Meeting took place in Niigata, Japan and hosted the 1st World Congress of Otology.
