The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport welcomes the appointment of its Rail Sector Ambassador and former President, Richard Brown CBE FCILT, as a non-executive member of the Department for Transport Board by Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin.

Richard was Chief Executive of Eurostar from August 2002 to April 2010 and Chairman until June this year, and was previously Commercial Director and main Board Director of National Express Group plc, where he set up its UK Trains Division, at the time the largest UK passenger franchise operator. Currently CILT’s Rail Professional Sector Ambassador and a Vice President he was also the Institute’s President in 2008/9.

Under Richard’s Ambassadorship CILT’s Rail Sector has seen a number of exciting changes. It now has a Strategic Rail Policy Forum looking at the future development of the UK’s railways and the Institute’s strategy for rail, and a Rail Forum that discusses current developments and opportunities in the rail industry.

Richard has also played a significant part in the creation of the Association of Rail Executives (ARE), a CILT supported organisation for leading professionals that meets to hear from high level speakers – most recently Tim Shoveller, Managing Director of the South West Trains/National Rail Alliance – and discuss industry developments. For more information on ARE see website www.railwayexecutives.co.uk

Richard conducted an independent review of the department’s rail franchising programme in 2012 following the cancellation of the Inter City West Coast franchise competition, to which the government has recently responded.

He joins lead non-executive director Sam Laidlaw and other non-executives Ed Smith, Alan Cook, Sally Davis, Mary Reilly and John Kirkland.
