Orchid Delivers 'Rounding 2.0' to Hospitals Across the U.S.

Last week at AONE 2014: Inspiring Leadership, CipherHealth launched Orchid, a nurse rounding solution that streamlines workflow, improves outcomes, and boosts patient satisfaction.

The latest innovation in CipherHealth’s patient communication suite, Orchid brings nurse rounding to the next level by moving the traditionally analog practice to a digital platform. The application is available for smartphones and tablets on iOS and Android platforms as well as workstations. Hospitals can choose from a variety of best practice scripts, such as hourly, manager, executive, and discharge rounding, and all scripts are customizable to meet the unique challenges of each hospital’s patient population.

With Orchid, CipherHealth enables nurses to regularly check in with every patient in the hospital to assess clinical and satisfaction needs. The clinician simply claims his or her patients from a list of patients on the unit, follows the desired script, and captures the answers in the application. If the patient answers a question negatively or has a concern, the appropriate hospital staff are alerted for follow up. When all is said and done, CipherHealth’s robust reporting platform delivers unprecedented visibility to nurse leaders which in turn leads to meaningful improvement. Beta customers have seen their HCAHPS ranks skyrocket as much as 71 percentage points for troublesome domains like Quietness of Hospital Environment.

“We were seeing tremendous results with our post-discharge follow-up product and wanted to bring that kind of performance to the inpatient setting. Ultimately, we work for nurses and patients, and with Orchid, we help the two communicate seamlessly when it matters most,” said Zach Silverzweig, Co-founder at CipherHealth.

CipherHealth has been helping hospitals communicate with patients and improve outcomes since the company’s launch in 2009, and is now working with clients in 30 states across the US. Based in New York City, the company is actively preparing for expansion and planning to open offices in Tennessee, Texas, and California in the coming year. CipherHealth’s partners have experienced dramatic results: from a 70% reduction in readmissions for asthma patients to a 30% improvement in targeted HCAHPS domains.
