LONDON, UK, June 12th, 2009 - Giselle Bodie, Managing Director at Cision UK, will today address the issue of national identity in social media when she speaks at the European Summit on Measurement in Berlin. Comparing leading German political blogs with their UK counterparts, Ms Bodie will put online media measurement in an international context and discuss the implications for communications professionals’ outreach and engagement strategies. Ms Bodie's analysis is based on the latest work from the Cision European Research team, who have combined search and social media metrics with in-house expertise to establish the potential influence of online media. Cision researchers in Germany and UK have applied this methodology to compile rankings for the Top 10 political blogs in their respective countries. This new research from Cision has identified a number of key differences in approaches to political blogging in the UK and Germany: • UK blogs are more obviously partisan. Cision's Top 10 UK political blogs are far more outspoken, frequently aligned with political parties as well as particular causes and are mostly right-of-centre. In stark contrast to German political blogging which is less opinionated and if anything veers left. • Leading German blogs are news aggregators. All top German political blogs show lower levels of engagement and interactivity than those in the UK, frequently linking to news content with a minimum level of description (albeit sometimes satirical description); UK political blogs of course link to material elsewhere on the web, but the nature and extent of their own content creates a more distinct identity. • There is far more comment on the UK blogs. UK political blogs are more visibly engaged with their audiences; there are strikingly few comments on the leading German political blogs. “With UK bloggers quick to criticise perceived political failings and dismissive of spin, slick messaging is unlikely to appear on UK blogs,” Ms Bodie said. “But they still offer greater potential engagement with a larger audience than their German counterparts.” Falk Rehkopf, Cision’s Head of European Research, said: “In German blogs the message will most likely reach the audience in its original form. Unlike UK bloggers, whose approach is more personal, German bloggers are likely simply to present – or link to – the relevant facts as reported elsewhere.” The UK For further information about Cision’s blog rankings and its social media research, please contact us at research.europe@cision.com or visit our website.
