Are low cost gyms the way forward?

With more people determined to become active in the North East, thanks to the Olympics, leisure and sport leaders are gathering to look at ways of becoming more competitive and ask if low cost gyms are the solution.

Representatives from across the industry are planning to meet at a seminar being held by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) next week.

The seminar, titled ‘Low cost gyms - the perfect business model?’ takes place on Monday December 17 at Sport Central, Northumbria University and will provide an insight into the benefits and disadvantages of low cost health clubs in the region.

Dr Michael Cassop Thompson, Chair of CIMSPA North East, said he is delighted the conference is being hosted in the area and believes it will offer leading sport and physical activity providers with a real insight into what makes the perfect business model.

Dr Cassop Thompson, who has been conducting research in the field, said: “CIMSPA North East is delighted to be hosting this event and look forward to exploring the best business models for sports and leisure providers in this tough economic climate."

CIMSPA’s CEO, Sean Holt, said: “As the unified voice driving the sector’s growth, CIMSPA is committed to ensuring the workforce is given the tools and information needed to thrive.

The seminar will provide a unique insight into the business models some leisure and physical activity providers use in order to beat off the competition.”

The event will feature a dragon’s den style scenario with delegates being invited to question the profitability and successes of each business model showcased on the day.
