Birmingham golfers wanted for launch of social media campaign

A unique Birmingham golf initiative has been launched calling on five golfing pros to tee-off and catch a birdie of a different sort when they take up Twitter.

Birmingham Golf Development Partnership is on the look out for five golfing professionals or club managers to take part in an exciting and unique social media-monitoring programme.

The chosen five will be given the opportunity to submerge themselves into the world of social media when they join forces with one of the UK’s top social media marketing agencies, Citydesk Sport.

Jason Sorrell from Birmingham Golf Partnership said he is excited about the programme and is looking forward to seeing an influx in people taking up golf, as a result.

He said:

“I think this is a wonderful opportunity for five golfing pros to become experts in social media.

Unfortunately there are a lot of misconceptions about golf but by using social media we will be able to break down a lot of the barriers that prevent people from giving golf a go.

For example, we know that a lot of young people would like to play golf but either think they’re too young to play or that it’s too expensive. We’ve already been successful in changing this perception and have over 2,500 people playing in Birmingham alone, but we want to encourage more young people to play. We launched an initiative last year offering a round of golf for as cheap as £3.50 and that has been really popular.”

Mr Sorrell now believes targeting people through social networking sites, like Facebook and Twitter, will give people a birds eye view of the sport to entice them into it.

He added: “This is the first time we’ve rolled out a programme of this kind and we’re really excited about it. The five chosen golfing pros are being given a great opportunity to not only build up their personal profiles but to also act as ambassadors of the sport and share their love of it with other potential golfers.”

The Birmingham Golf Development Partnership launched a social media campaign last year, which was successful in helping more than 2,500 people take up golf.
