CIMSPA’s new award for pool water quality
Standards are to be raised in swimming pools across the country thanks to a new water quality award.
The Chartered Institute for Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) has launched a first-of-its-kind pool water quality award, which they say will help raise standards in the sector, across the country.
The initiative provides leisure centres and other pool operators with a framework for promoting high standards of pool water quality in the UK, that also recognises good practice.
Sean Holt, CEO of CIMSPA, said:
“CIMSPA are delighted to announce it now offers an award for Pool Water Quality.
“Assessment against the current industry standards provides pool providers and their customers with the reassurance that the pool water quality has been reviewed by specialist assessors who will advise them with any actions required to bring the quality up to the mark.
The quality of the water in a pool or spa is a key factor in bather comfort. It is reassuring to customers to know that the water they swim in is clean, safe and to the highest standard.”
The voluntary scheme is open to all swimming pools in the UK, including public pools, hotel pools, health and fitness club pools and holiday park facilities.
Industry experts will either confirm good pool water quality arrangements are in place or identify improvements to be made which may prevent infection or bather discomfort.
Pools which comply to industry standards will receive a certificate to display for the lifetime of the award – so customers and staff know the pool meets the highest levels of water quality.
They will also be given the opportunity to display a plaque.

1. Launched in April 2011, CIMSPA is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector.
2. The new Institute was formed, following pressure from Government, for the sports industry to merge and streamline existing workforce development bodies to create one single professional development body to represent the entire sport and physical activity sector.

7. The Chairman of CIMSPA is Miles Templeman - former Director General of the Institute of Directors (IoD) and current Non Executive Director of the RFU.
8. In May 2012, the CIMSPA Rising Talent programme was launched to cater for the 30% of the 1 million workforce (ref SkillActive) who are under 30 years of age.
9. In August 2011, Sebastian Coe was awarded the position of Companion of CIMSPA in recognition of his significant contribution to the sports and physical activity sector. In acceptance of the award, Lord Coe said, “I am honoured to become a companion of CIMSPA, which marks a real milestone for the sports and physical activity sector in the UK. By bringing together the skills and expertise of everyone in the industry, we will be in an incredibly strong position to ensure that the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be felt throughout the UK for many years to come.”
