Northern Ireland leads the way in health and safety

Sport and leisure chiefs from across Northern Ireland are gearing up for a one-of-a-kind conference to look at health and safety issues in the work place.

A unique ‘Health and Safety...Why bother?’ seminar, held by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) will take place on Tuesday October 23 at Ballyearl Arts and Leisure Centre, Newtownabbey.

Paul Lyness, chair of Northern Ireland’s CIMSPA board, said the seminar would enable leading sport and physical activity providers the opportunity to share their experiences and best practices with one another.

Delegates will be given an understanding of the implications and impact on their customers and business if health and safety standards are not adhered to.

Mr Lyness said:

I am pleased Northern Ireland is flying the health and safety flag. The Newtownabbey conference will see a range of guest speakers providing sport and physical activity leaders in the Northern Ireland an insight into how to manage technical, legal and practical management surrounding health and safety requirements.”

Speakers include Andy Large, Operations Director at ALS-Envex, who will give an overview of the requirements for managing legionella. While Martin Symcox, Business Development Manager at IQL, will talk about the importance of lifeguard training as well as showcasing a new training package available.

Peter Mills, managing director at QLM will reveal the new CIMSPA European Pool Safety Award and talk about the crucial role it plays in promoting swimming pool safety.

CIMSPA

·      Launched in April 2011, CIMSPA is the professional development body for the UK’s sport and physical activity sector.  

·      The new Institute was formed, following pressure from Government, for the sports industry to merge and streamline existing workforce development bodies to create one single professional development body to represent the entire sport and physical activity sector.

·      CIMSPA provides leadership, professional development and a single unified voice for the sector. It also aims to drive standards of professional practice, which in turn will support increased participation, outcomes and contribution to UK plc.

·      CIMSPA was awarded Chartership status by the Royal Privy Council in January 2012, creating the first Chartered professional body for the sport and physical activity workforce.

·      CIMSPA is entirely self funded from membership fees and professional development training courses and to date has not received any grant funding or Government subsidy. 

·      The title of the Chartered Institute reflects the need to support not just those working within sport and 'formal' sporting environments but those working in physical activity disciplines including health and community workers.

·      The Chairman of CIMSPA is Miles Templeman - former Director General of the Institute of Directors (IoD) and current Non Executive Director of the RFU.

·      In May 2012, the CIMSPA Rising Talent programme was launched to cater for the 30% of the 1 million workforce (ref SkillActive) who are under 30 years of age.

·    In August 2011, Sebastian Coe was awarded the position of Companion of CIMSPA in recognition of his significant contribution to the sports and physical activity sector.  In acceptance of the award, Lord Coe said, “I am  honoured to become a companion of CIMSPA, which marks a real milestone for the sports and physical activity sector in the UK.  By bringing together the skills and expertise of everyone in the industry, we will be in an incredibly strong position to ensure that the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be felt throughout the UK for many years to come.”  

The County Sports Partnership Network (CSPN)

·      The County Sports Partnership Network brings together 49 County Sports Partnerships from across England, and is responsible for supporting the delivery of national sports policy at a local level by shaping it to the needs of local communities.

·      The CSPN contributes to the health of the nation by helping local people lead healthier, active lives.

·     The CSPN brings together the knowledge and expertise of a range of local delivery partners – including local authorities, clubs and schools – enabling it to use resources in the most efficient way possible to deliver sport in the local community.
