PC Nicola Hughes would ‘feel proud’
A devoted dad has persuaded hundreds of police officers to take part in a running challenge in tribute to his daughter PC Nicola Hughes, with the help of an innovative web-based activity logging platform Workplace Challenge.
Bryn Hughes decided to run the North Pole Marathon, with a friend, in memory of his murdered daughter Nicola, 23 and asked police forces from across the country to support him by running two miles a day for 125 days.
Nicola and her late colleague, PC Fiona Bone, were shot dead by Dale Cregan, while on duty in Greater Manchester last year.
Bryn, from Huddersfield, who had never run before embarking on his mammoth challenge said he wanted to raise funds for a charity he’s set up in tribute to Nicola – the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund – as well as Victim Support, Care of Police Survivors and the North West Police Benevolent Fund.
Bryn said he’s been wowed by the uptake with over 1800 officers taking part to date.
The CSP Network – which is responsible for supporting the delivery of national sports policy by encouraging the nation to lead healthier, active lives – has also supported Bryn’s Run to Remember.
The CSP Network, in collaboration with the British Heart Foundation, has created a bespoke Workplace Challenge platform, for the police force to use during the Run to Remember Challenge.
The Workplace Challenge software enables officers who are taking part in the daily runs to log their miles online and unlock a host of benefits such as assessing how many calories they have burned, how their activities compare with others as well as which police force is clocking up the most miles (and earning more Workplace Challenge points) across the police force.
Bryn said the Workplace Challenge tool is invaluable for helping him to assess how the officers are getting on across the whole country.
He said:
“We are thrilled the CSP Network has backed our Run to Remember. The Workplace Challenge platform allows us all to keep motivated and support each other through a safe online community.
I think Nicola would feel very proud, and a little bit embarrassed, that this is all being done for her. But, I think she would feel immensely proud to be part of the big police family and that so many people have signed up to run two miles a day, for 125 days in her memory.”
The Run to Remember challenge will finish on April 4, just days before Bryn takes on his own North Pole Marathon challenge.

NOTES TO EDITORS:
Workplace Challenge
- Workplace Challenge is a free online platform enabling people to log all of their physical activity.
- Throughout 2014, employees and employers will be encouraged to start logging and generate points, enabling them to take part in a series of challenges, events and competitions.
- Points are calculated according to Metabolic Equivalents (METs) where 1MET is a person's average seated energy expenditure which is equivalent to 1kcal.kg-1.h-1. MET values will be different for different forms of exercise and will increase with the intensity and duration of exercise.
- Active loggers will be able to see a variety of stats including distance travelled, calorie burned and CO2 saved.
- A minimum of three registered employees are required for a workplace to appear in a leader board and people can also track their own individual progress locally and nationally.
- The platform has been developed, following a successful pilot by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, with £500k investment from Sport England and will be run by the County Sports Partnership Network with support from the British Heart Foundation Health at Work team.
- Local County Sports Partnerships will manage the online platform for their community, ensuring that there are challenges, activities and competitions available offline to encourage people to stay active.
- It is anticipated that many people will use the platform to fundraise. E.g. The platform is already being used to support the ‘Run to Remember’ helping the Police in raising money for PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, Victim Support, Care of Police Survivors and the North West Police Benevolent Fund.
County Sports Partnership Network
- The CSP Network represents 49 local County Sports Partnership teams across the country.
- Collectively, they contribute to the health of the nation by helping local partners, organisations and delivers to promote the benefits of active lifestyles across local communities.
- The CSP Network delivered The Community Games – one of the most successful community campaigns seen in the UK, attracting over 2 million members of the public to come together in local communities to take part in active cultural events inspired by 2012.
