Workplace Challenge backs Run to Remember for PC Nicola

The country’s only national workplace online activity tracker has today announced its support for a mammoth 125-day police running challenge in memory of murdered Police Officer Nicola Hughes.

Workplace Challenge – a free online activity tracker designed and developed by the County Sports Partnership Network (CSP Network) – has created a bespoke Workplace Challenge online activity logger for police forces across the country who are pledging to run two miles every day, for 125 days, in memory of PC Hughes.

Nicola, 23, and her colleague PC Fiona Bone, 32, were shot dead by Dale Cregan when lured to a fake burglary in Hattersley, Greater Manchester, last year.

Nicola’s father, Bryn Hughes, from Huddersfield, has launched the Run to Remember campaign to raise money for the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, Victim Support, Care of Police Survivors and the North West Police Benevolent Fund.

He has asked for ten police officers from each force across the country to take part in the Run to Remember and raise £100 each. And now, thanks to the support from Workplace Challenge he is able to track how many miles officers have clocked up across the country as well as spark healthy competition amongst police forces.

So far a whopping 1,800 police officers have signed up to the running challenge, with a number of them already logging their activity on the police forces’ bespoke Workplace Challenge platform.

Mr Hughes said:

“I have been overwhelmed by the level of support the running challenge in memory of Nicola, has received.

The support offered by the CSP Network and the contribution of the Workplace Challenge tool for police forces to use across the country has enabled us to encourage more officers to take part in the run, which will in turn hopefully help raise thousands of pounds for charity.

The Workplace Challenge platform has allowed officers to log their activity daily as well as keep them motivated with a bit of healthy competition amongst their colleagues from all over the country.”

Mr Hughes kick started the 125 day running challenge on December 1 and is organising a grand finale for all the officers to run the last two miles together on April 4.

Following this, he plans to take part in his own running challenge, by completing the North Pole Marathon on April 9.

Lee Mason, Chief Executive of the CSP Network, said:

“The CSP Network is delighted to be supporting police forces across the country in their two miles per day, for 125 days, challenge in memory of PC Hughes.

The Run to Remember is a wonderful way to remember a dedicated and loyal police officer who lost her life in such tragic circumstances and demonstrates the power of sport in uniting people in the utmost difficult of times.

We hope that many will be inspired by the police to take up their own fundraising challenges in 2014 and the platform will be available to the public across 25 areas from January 2014.”

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Workplace Challenge

  • Workplace Challenge is a free online platform enabling people to log all of their physical activity.
  • Throughout 2014, employees and employers will be encouraged to start logging and generate points, enabling them to take part in a series of challenges, events and competitions.
  • Points are calculated according to Metabolic Equivalents (METs) where 1MET is a person's average seated energy expenditure which is equivalent to 1kcal.kg-1.h-1. MET values will be different for different forms of exercise and will increase with the intensity and duration of exercise.
  • Active loggers will be able to see a variety of stats including distance travelled, calorie burned and CO2 saved.
  • A minimum of three registered employees are required for a workplace to appear in a leader board and people can also track their own individual progress locally and nationally.
  • The platform has been developed, following a successful pilot by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, with £500k investment from Sport England and will be run by the County Sports Partnership Network with support from the British Heart Foundation Health at Work team.
  • Local County Sports Partnerships will manage the online platform for their community, ensuring that there are challenges, activities and competitions available offline to encourage people to stay active.
  • It is anticipated that many people will use the platform to fundraise. E.g. The platform is already being used to support the ‘Run to Remember’ helping the Police in raising money for PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, Victim Support, Care of Police Survivors and the North West Police Benevolent Fund.
