New R&D project Modulus granted
On April 20, 2021, Industrial Solar GmbH and its consortium partners received the grant agreement for the R&D project Modulus. The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), aims to simplify the integration of solar heat into industrial processes. The total funding volume for Industrial Solar GmbH amounts to € 218.977.
Together with its consortium partners AURA GmbH & Co. KG, Protarget AG, Solarlite CSP Technology GmbH, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, Industrial Solar GmbH applied for funding of the planned R&D activities to simplify the integration of solar process heat systems industry in 2020. Now the funding was granted and the project starts on April 1 with a duration of 3 years.
The usage of solar process heat systems is essential for the decarbonization of industry that accounts for one third of the global emissions. A major hurdle for the market introduction of this technology are the high costs of the peripheral components of a solar thermal collector field. These costs consist of material costs and engineering costs. To minimize these components, three competing manufacturers of different collector types – one Linear Fresnel and two parabolic troughs – share their experience in the field of solar process heat with a specialized Balance of Plant (BoP) construction company and two proven research institutes in order to jointly develop a largely standardized modular and scalable heat transfer station, BoP, as an interface between the solar field and the industrial process heat system. Three test units, covering different, practice-relevant performance variables, temperature levels and heat transfer media supplied to customers, are going to be built and evaluated.
The overall concept should be open for future expansions with primary circuit modules for alternative heat transfer media (e.g., steam or hot water) and the connection of thermal storage as a system component to stabilize operation and increase the solar energy contribution.
The project is financed by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, and Industrial Solar GmbH will receive € 218.977 with a funding rate of 60%.
