Severity of the Climate Crisis Pushes for the Promotion of Renewables
From China to Europe, the increased frequency and strength of floods has literally taken the world by storm. Climate scientists agree that rising temperatures leading to increased rainfall resulted in the unprecedented devastation caused across northwestern Europe. Renewable energy is one of the most effective tools we have in the fight against climate change, and the transition from the current energy system that relies heavily on fossil fuels to a system that uses renewable energy sources is needed.
The recent extreme weather events in Europe have demonstrated that the climate crisis is not some distant problem on the other side of the world, rather directly on our doorstep. Floods, tornados and heat waves have cost many lives, and policy choices become unavoidable in order to switch from a fossil-based energy system to one based on renewables such as solar and wind energy.
Some countries are more committed than others; the French parliament, for example, sealed a comprehensive legislative package on climate protection that punishes ‘ecocide’ and bans domestic flights. And in Germany, proposals for solar obligation for new buildings have been suggested and an earlier coal phase-out is again up for debate.
It has become obvious that action is required immediately, and that technologies and solutions based on renewables facilitating a circular economy are essential in avoiding similar and repeated disasters from occurring in the years to come.
Industry is responsible for one third of our primary energy demand – equivalent to the energy required for the transport sector. About 75% percent of the industrial energy is required in form of thermal energy, i.e., heat for production processes like boiling, drying, pasteurization etc. This heat demand is currently mainly covered by fossil fired boilers – burning gas, oil and coal. Reducing carbon emissions from the industrial sector has a direct and positive impact on climate protection.
The potential of solar technologies to supply clean energy to industry is almost untouched.
