A grant amount of 7,007,474.00 € was awarded to the project consortium MELoDIZER, consisting of 18 partners from 12 different countries, of which Clean Industry Solutions’ subsidiary SolarSpring GmbH is a partner. The project aims to increase resource efficiency and resilience in industrial processes and focuses on implementing high-performance membrane distillation (MD) in key industrial applications. Total funding of 230,125 € will be assigned to SolarSpring to design and build an MD system targeting resource recovery and wastewater reduction in the textile and food and beverage industry.

In response to the EU HORIZON call for a more Digitised, Resource Efficient and Resilient Industry 2022, the MELoDIZER project implements high-performance membranes and modules in strategic membrane distillation applications (MD), hence providing a decisive step for the further commercial breakthrough and the success of MD. These core components within the project will be fabricated with a focus on feasible broad uptake and sustainability, substituting harmful materials and protocols with >80% of benign solvents and relying on green chemistry principles.
Both flat-sheets and innovative hollow-fiber modules will be developed with a focus on hydrodynamic and energy recovery improvements. The membranes and modules will be installed as core components of four MD pilot systems and implemented at four different demonstration sites, in Greece, Spain, and Israel. One plot system, built by SolarSpring, will be demonstrated in industrial facilities for textile and beverage to reuse wastewater (70-90%), thus reducing the water footprint and approaching zero waste.
A further pilot system will be installed to recover valuable nutrients as secondary raw materials from aquaculture wastewater. Two more prototype MD systems will be demonstrated as low-cost, ready-to-use, passive, autonomous, decentralized units, delivering drinking water from saline and other challenging water sources at the community and household level. All prototypes will be run with 90-100% sustainable energy from waste heat and solar power, with energy concepts that maximize membrane and system performance. The project is expected to begin towards the end of 2022 and will take 4 years to complete. Of the total project funding volume amounting to approximately 7 m€, SolarSpring will receive 230,125 € with a funding rate of 70%.
