MSC sustainability certification most robust according to new Accenture study

There are numerous certification bodies around the world that assess the sustainability of fishing practices and in 2009, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) commissioned a report to assess these certification programs in order to rate the robustness of their sustainability criteria.

Their latest update, by Accenture, just published (Sep 2012) - Smart Fishing Initiative: Comparison of Wild-Captured Fisheries Certification Schemes - presents the results of an enhanced analysis of four certification programs and their effectiveness in addressing the health of fisheries and oceans.

According to the report, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification once again received the highest marks among those surveyed. In fact, based on the quantitative evaluation conducted in the study, MSC was found to be compliant with the WWF criteria, while Friend of the Sea, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and Iceland Responsible Fisheries were considered to be only semi-compliant.

Sigve Nordrum, Director of Sustainability for the fishery used by Cleanmarine® Krill Oil comments "We realized from the very beginning that sustainability was an issue of great importance, which is why we partnered with WWF-Norway to help us to provide a sustainable krill harvest. It was WWF that encouraged us to pursue MSC certification, which we achieved in June 2010.  It is heartening to see that MSC has once again been validated as the leading certification program in Accenture's updated study."

So when you choose an Omega 3 supplement make sure it comes from a sustainable source by checking for the MSC eco-label

Krill supplements are the fastest growing omega-3 products today. Consumer research shows that this is largely due to the positive consumer experience. Krill Oil provides phospholipid omega-3s, which are more bio-efficient than fish oil Omega 3’s, allowing for a smaller capsule, are easy on digestion, free of stomach discomfort and "fishy-burps
