Garrett Regional Medical Center Hospital Laboratory Receives First-Time CAP Accreditation

Deep Creek Times

The Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded accreditation to Garrett Regional Medical Center Hospital Laboratory, based on results of a recent on-site inspection as part of the CAP’s Accreditation Programs.  This is the first time in the history of the hospital that this accreditation has been established for the medical center.

The facility’s new medical director, David M. Howell, MD, PhD, is a pathologist with a faculty appointment with WVU Medicine and is now contracted to be the physician director for GRMCs Laboratory.  He was advised of this national recognition and congratulated the staff for the excellent services being provided. Garrett Regional Medical Center Laboratory is one of more than 7,700 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide and extends great appreciation to pathologist, David Dusenbery MD, for his significant contributions and assistance to bring the accreditation about.

“The CAP accreditation process is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients. This is the standard of care that our staff delivers every day, to patients that require laboratory services,” said Mark Boucot, GRMC President & CEO. “It is a credit to the hard work of our laboratory staff that the Hospital has been awarded accreditation from such a prestigious organization.”  CAP inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years in great detail.  Inspectors also examine the laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

The U. S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960’s as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.

The College of American Pathologists is the leading organization with more than 18,000 board-certified pathologists and serves patients, pathologists, and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide. The CAP’s Laboratory Improvement Programs, initiated 65 years ago, currently have customers in more than 100 countries, accrediting 7,700 laboratories and providing proficiency testing to 20,000 laboratories worldwide.
