College of DuPage Grad Takes Deep-Ocean Submergence Dive in ‘Alvin’

College of DuPage graduate Julianne Fernandez recently dove deep into the Atlantic Ocean aboard a high-tech submergence vehicle to which few have access. Currently working on her Ph.D. in Geology at the University of Cincinnati, Fernandez (formerly of Glendale Heights) was selected for a two-week National Science Foundation expedition for early career marine scientists to learn about research using submarines. As part of this project, she was trained using “Alvin,” a deep submergence vehicle (DSV) owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods

Veterans Experience Unique, Adventure-Based Course Offered by COD in the Rockies

During a new College of DuPage class, veterans explored concepts of leadership, conflict management and personal development while backpacking through the Rockies. The Veterans Rockies Encounter class, which was funded through the College Foundation’s Resource for Excellence grant program, gave nine COD students who are military veterans a unique setting in which to earn credit. COD Computed Tomography Students Hired Before Program Completion

The majority of students in College of DuPage’s Computed Tomography Certificate program were hired while still completing the program and preparing to sit for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam. “The success of the students from last year is absolutely wonderful,” said CT instructor Judith Loughlin. “Our students are well-prepared, professional and enthusiastic and were able to secure positions while still in the program.” Loughlin said the students’ success reflects their dedication, as well as the College’s ability to recognize and fill an increasing need

The new Foundations of Data Science certificate program at College of DuPage prepares students for careers in data analysis fields while providing cross-training for employees who want a sought-after skills set. College of DuPage graduate Stephanie Torres of Naperville has been elected as the new student member of the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). A graduate of COD’s Nursing program, Torres currently is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in public health at Northern Illinois University. While at College of DuPage, Torres served as Student Trustee on the College’s Board of Trustee and as Student Body President. College of DuPage recently received a grant through the Disability Employment Initiative designed to provide training and employment skills to individuals with disabilities. COD BNA Program Achieves 100 Percent Pass Rate

COD Architecture Students Design and Build Campus Gathering Pavilion

Seven College of DuPage Architecture students have turned their vision into reality after designing, building and installing a gathering pavilion on the Glen Ellyn campus. Located next to the McAninch Arts Center, the wooden open-air structure is called Umbra 82 by the students who created it. “Umbra” refers to the darkest part of a shadow, while 82 is the number of white boxes that are inset into the piece. College of DuPage recently hosted a large-scale, “multi-casualty” incident simulation that included a collaboration between College participants, Central DuPage Hospital and local first responders. College of DuPage Architecture student Matthew Ziemer recently earned the top prize at the second annual Coalition of Community College Architectures Programs student design competition. Fellow COD student Douglas Lemley received Honorable Mention in the competition. Winners were announced at the CCCAP’s annual conference held last month in Philadelphia. COD Nursing Graduate Receives Pin from Flight Nurse Who Cared for Father

When College of DuPage student Kelly Procek of Woodridge recently graduated from the Nursing program, she received her pin from a flight nurse in Wisconsin who inspired her own journey. It was also the first time Procek met the nurse, Jon Hagen, although their history goes back almost 15 years. In 2002, Hagen and his flight partner Pam Hillen responded to a one-car rollover crash in Wisconsin in which Procek’s father, Tom, was critically injured. COD Students Compete in Seventh Annual NASA Robotic Mining Competition

Geared toward undergraduate and graduate student teams, the competition required teams to design and build a mining robot that could navigate a simulated Martian terrain, excavate as much simulated Martian regolith (superficial material covering solid rock) and gravel as possible, and deposit the material into a collection bin.For the second year in a row, College of DuPage was one of only two community colleges invited to participate in the 2016 NASA Robotic Mining Competition held at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. WDCB’s use of the 90.7 signal in Chicago is the result of a collaboration between WDCB and Chicago Public Media.WDCB 90.9 FM, which has served Chicagoland for 39 years through its 5000 watt FM signal at 90.9 from west suburban Glen Ellyn, has added a second signal at 90.7FM. This cross-discipline approach provides students with the skills for entry-level employment as interface designers, user experience designers, interaction designers and front-end developers.The new Interactive Media Degree at College of DuPage combines courses from three programs to best prepare students for careers developing web sites, digital interfaces and other interactive media applications.
