B.S. Program Responds to Demand for Expertise in Public Policy Research and Analysis

The College of Mount Saint Vincent has announced a new interdisciplinary program in Market Data Analytics that will establish the College as a leader in the area of “Big Data” and digital marketing and media analysis. The College learned today that the New York State Education Department had approved the new Bachelor of Science degree program.

The Market Data Analytics program will expose students to the study and utilization of marketplace data using analytical procedures, quantitative reasoning, and rigorous deduction. The new major is the first program to be developed through the College’s recently announced Fishlinger Center for Public Policy Research, which was established to provide a forum for discourse by training and involving students, faculty, and staff in research and analysis.

“The interdisciplinary major combines courses from the Communication, Business and Economics, and Mathematics Departments, and will provide students with a unique set of analytical and critical thinking skills that can be applied to a wide range of professional career paths,” said Guy E. Lometti, Ph.D., Provost and Dean of Faculty of the College and Chair of the Fishlinger Center’s Advisory Board. “Students will progress from a procedural and computational understanding to a broad understanding, encompassing logical reasoning, generalization, abstraction, and proof of data analytics.”

The major will focus on providing a foundation in economics and marketing and the fundamental tools used in quantitative methods that are necessary for further study in market analytics. Students in the program will develop a host of skills related to market data analysis, including advanced statistics, digital media marketing, and data mining experience. Students will acquire research skills from the marketing research course internship at the College’s research center, as well as through an independent research project. The new major will be added to the curriculum by the time the first students enroll in August 2015.

The newly established Fishlinger Center for Public Policy Research is poised to conduct deep and broad studies of public opinion on key public policy concerns through independent and objective research conducted by students, faculty, and other members of the academic community. The Market Data Analytics degree program is the first of many opportunities for scholarship and exploration at the College that will offer new ways of engaging in research to encourage meaningful dialog and constructive action.
