WASHINGTON, DC – The Collins│JohnsonGroup is pleased to announce that Darrel Thompson has joined our firm as a Principal.

A highly-respected Capitol Hill veteran with decades of political, legislative and policy experience, Thompson enhances our firm's capacity to help clients achieve their strategic goals and seize fresh opportunities.

Previously, Thompson served as deputy chief of staff for Intergovernmental and External Affairs for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. In this position, he advised the Majority Leader on a range of issues including national labor and employment, health care, transportation, housing, education, renewable energy, and economic development. He also counseled the Majority Leader on social justice concerns involving the faith and African-American communities, as well as issues affecting the District of Columbia.

“Darrel's solid reputation and record of success makes him a tremendous asset to our team,” said Founding Partner Broderick Johnson. “We are elated to welcome such a seasoned professional who can support our clients in navigating the complex issues they face.”

As a trusted advisor to the Majority Leader, Thompson collaborated with legislative committees to secure bipartisan support for the Export-Import Bank Reauthorization Act and Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). He developed outreach strategies that engaged stakeholders around the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Budget Control Act. And he worked closely with national business and union interests to resolve labor disputes in the health care and transportation industries. He also advocated for local autonomy for the District.

Prior to joining Senator Reid, Thompson was chief of staff to the Barack Obama for U.S. Senate campaign. He served as finance chief of staff and national political advisor for U.S. Congressman Richard Gephardt's 2004 presidential campaign. He also held several senior positions during Mr. Gephardt's tenure as House Democratic Leader, and served as the deputy executive director of the House Democratic Caucus. Earlier in his career, Thompson was the financial services director for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), where he consulted for over 100 congressional campaigns.

In April of 2011, founding partners Art Collins and Broderick Johnson joined forces to offer political, policy, and communications strategies to corporations, executives, and other entities engaged with the public sector at all levels. As the firm continues to grow, Art Collins expressed his enthusiasm about its future.

“As the Collins│Johnson Group continues to expand its talented team and deliver greater impact for its clients, Darrel provides another level of expertise, experience and perspective.

We are confident he will be an integral part of our success and that of our clients,” said Collins.

A native D.C. resident, Thompson is currently a candidate for the District's Ward 6 City Council seat, a post where he will bring his vast experience in public service to provide new leadership to the people of Ward 6 and the District of Columbia.

Thompson holds a Masters in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Political Science from Morgan State University. He and his wife, Dr. Britt Weinstock, reside in the District's Capitol Hill community.
