Oil leak at Karkkila

Early in the morning of 15 September 2005, heavy fuel oil from the
district heating plant alongside the Componenta Karkkila foundry spilled
into the nearby River Karjaanjoki. The fire brigade managed to contain
the spread of the oil with oil spill booms, after which work on removing
the oil started immediately.

The heavy fuel oil used for heating spilled into the river from the
nearby heating plant. Some 100 - 200 litres of oil spilled into the
river. Maintenance work on equipment at the heating plant had been
carried out the previous day in preparation for the approaching winter
heating season and a valve embedded in heat insulating material did not
close properly. Oil dripped out of the tank onto the floor and from there
seeped into the river via a rainwater drain. The emergency services are
using peat to absorb the oil and remove it from the river, and this will
be taken to a hazardous waste treatment plant to be destroyed. The costs
from the damage are small.

The district heating plant is managed by Wanhan Ruukin Kiinteistöpalvelu
Oy, part of Componenta Group.

The oil leak did not pose a hazard to residents in the area. It will also
not interrupt production at the foundry or other companies in the area.
