“Proceedings of the IEEE” Hosts Centennial Engineering Innovation Forum in DC to Unveil Advanced Technologies Dedicated to Improving Quality of Life
Global experts highlight world-changing technologies that will enhance the quality of life for people worldwide as part of the Proceedings of the IEEE 100th Anniversary Program
Piscataway, NJ – June 21, 2012 – Proceedings of the IEEE, the most highly-cited general-interest journal in electrical engineering and computer science, will host a Centennial Engineering Innovation Forum in honor of its centennial anniversary at the JW Marriott in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 28 and 29. Led by globally recognized engineering experts, the Forum will cover eight emerging technologies that offer clear benefits to improving the quality of life for citizens worldwide.

Under an umbrella-theme of Improving Quality Of Life Through Engineering Innovations, the forum will cover eight topical areas through panel discussions during the two-day forum including:

“The centennial commemoration Forum is an important celebratory moment not only for the journal, but also for IEEE members and the engineering industry because it provides the premier forum for discussing new, innovative technologies that can transform the quality of life for people on every continent,” said Editor-In-Chief Robert J. Trew. “To mark this historic occasion, the Proceedings of the IEEE editorial board and staff created an unforgettable line-up of experts for this engineering Forum, complemented by a Future Predictions Contest, a special Centennial Retrospective Issue and classic papers from the Proceedings of the IEEE’s archives, among other activities.”
Subra Suresh, director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), will keynote the Forum with opening remarks by Gordon Day, IEEE President; Dr. Trew and Professor Metin Akay, Founding Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Houston and Chair of the Centennial Engineering Forum. Other highly-recognized guests will include Susan Blumenthal, former U.S. Surgeon General, Kristina M. Johnson, former Undersecretary for Energy at the Department of Energy, Dave McQueeney, vice president of Software at IBM Research and Yongmin Kim, president of Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea.

Chairing the prestigious Centennial Engineering Innovations Forum is Professor Metin Akay, Founding Chair, John S. Dunn Endowed Chair Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering, known and respected for his distinguished contributions to medical and biological engineering. Professor Akay is also an inductee of two prestigious engineering and science organizations: the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
Honorary Forum Chair is Dr. Robert J. Trew, The Alton and Mildred Lancaster Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University. Last year, Professor Trew was named a Fellow of the AAAS. He is currently serving as editor-in-chief of the Proceedings of the IEEE and is a past editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques. Dr. Trew was also the founding co-editor-in-chief of IEEE Microwave Magazine.
Distinguished Forum Committee
The five distinguished Forum Committee members are Dr. Leda Lunardi, Fellow IEEE and professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering, North Carolina State University; Dr. Gabriel Rebeiz, Fellow IEEE and Wireless Communications Industry Chair and Professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, San Diego; Dr. Kamal Sarabandi, The Rufus S. Teesdale Professor of Engineering, University of Michigan; Dr. Usha Varshney, Division Director and Program Director, National Science Foundation; and Dr. Dwight Woolard, Department of Solid State Devices, U.S. Army Research Laboratory.

Founding of Proceedings of the IEEE
The Proceedings of the IEEE has a long and rich history that can be traced back to its early beginnings in 1909, when it was known as the Proceedings of the Wireless Institute. This Wireless Institute began as a society for those interested in wireless engineering. Six issues of the Proceedings journal were published in 1909 under the direction of Greenleaf Pickard and Alfred Goldsmith. In 1911, the New York-based Wireless Institute merged with the Boston-based Society of Wireless Telegraph Engineers to become the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). Wanting to continue the publishing of Proceedings, Pickard and Goldsmith published the first issue of Proceedings of the IRE (Volume 1) in January of 1913. Goldsmith, a Columbia University professor who had edited the Proceedings of the Wireless Institute, continued as editor of the new journal. This is the milestone of the official birth date of this journal.
