Vivid Sydney, the annual festival of lights, music and ideas kicks-off May 25, 2012 in Australia

1) What is the theme of this year’s festival?

We found ourselves drawn to light sculptures that were highly creative, that used innovative technology and engaged the audience. As a public event it is essential that we present a program that is highly imaginative and stretches artists and lighting designers on many levels.

2) What is the key attraction of Vivid Light?

The key attraction of Vivid Light is to see Sydney illuminated with over 50 light installations that have been imaginatively designed by light artists, designers and architects from across Australia and around the world. Many of the light installations are interactive so you can come and play in Sydney's light wonderland and add your own creativity to Vivid Light!

3) How did you select the final line up of light sculptures and installations?

We were impressed by the quality of submissions, with 35 per cent more entries than in 2011. We selected artists, designers, architects, students and creative industry companies for their distinction in audience interaction, innovative design and ground breaking story telling, as well as the sculpture’s smart energy efficiency. Vivid Light continues to grow with over 75 artists and creative collaborators contributing to this year’s festival. More importantly, Vivid Sydney is growing in the ways that light is being creatively interpreted allowing us to learn more about the impact and playfulness of light.

4) What kind of light art sculptures and installations will be displayed along Sydney’s harbour shore?

Visitors will see Sydney 's Circular Quay and The Rocks glowing with over 50 interactive and immersive light art sculptures, featuring our city’s finest and iconic buildings, the Sydney Opera House, Customs House and the Museum of Contemporary Art, transformed by amazing 3D digital light projections.

We are also creating a night time playground of interactive light installations for everyone to enjoy, with artists creating a giant game of TicTacToe, and a modern spin on Hopscotch. There is even a whimsical installation designed to empower people to follow their dreams by giving them magical, luminous wings and you can even come along and just have a good old-fashioned shout at the installation ‘Screaming Rapture’. Vivid Sydney is a celebration of this wonderful city as it becomes awash with colour, light and creativity.
