Texas Ranks 4th Highest U.S. State for Abortions

DALLAS - January 19, 2012 - Council for Life will honor Sanctity of Life month with their annual Life Lessons Box Lunch on January 24, 2012. The recognition of sanctity of life began when President Ronald Reagan recognized January 22, 1984, as the first Sanctity of Life day in conjunction with the 11th anniversary of Roe vs Wade. Organizations have since dedicated the entire month of January to raising awareness for Life.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, Texas ranks fourth in the nation for its high number of abortions.  In 2008, more than 84,000 Texas women, 15% of all pregnancies, obtained an abortion from one of the 1,793 abortion providers in the state.  While abortion rates are steadily declining over the last ten years, Council for Life encourages women to turn to a life-affirming organization like the Dallas Pregnancy Resource Center, the Fort Worth Pregnancy Center, the Mid Cities Pregnancy Center, Real Options for Women or the Gladney Center for Adoption for assistance.

Since Council for Life was founded in 2001, the organization has raised more than $3.3 million for 32 life-affirming organizations such as pregnancy resource centers, teen abstinence and sex education programs and adoption agencies.

“Our goal is to encourage women to explore their options when it comes to pregnancy. Dallas is home to several organizations that work to help the lives of both the mother and the baby,” said Janna Lewis, Council for Life president. “We hope to educate not only women, but men as well, on the value of life.”

Council for Life’s Life Lessons Box Lunch will feature personal testimonies from Reverend Philip Jones, Senior Pastor at All Saints Church in Dallas, and his wife Claudia. The event will take place at the Museum of Biblical Art on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. Lunch is available for $12. Guests can register for the event and pre-purchase a lunch by visiting www.councilforlife.org
