Sheep’s ball stew and giant fruit bat – “delicacies” eaten by Brits on holiday revealed

A new study* has highlighted some of the most unusual foods that Brits on holiday have eaten – with some stomach churning results. The poll - carried out by caravan insurance specialists Cover4Caravans as part of their ILoveUK campaign – showed that 10% of customers said the most unusual thing they have eaten on holiday is octopus.

The research also showed that:

  • 9% of respondents said squid;
  • 7% said snails;
  • 5% said frogs’ legs.

Among the even more unusual things eaten were:

  • sheep’s ball stew;
  • giant fruit bat;
  • deep fried mars bar; and
  • camel.

Richard Burgess, Director at Cover4Caravans.co.uk says: “We consider ourselves a fun company and when we talk to our clients we do like to ask them questions about their travel experiences.   I must admit though, some of the answers we get are a bit surprising!

“We launched the ILoveUK campaign to find out what makes our clients tick in terms of favourite holiday destinations, food eaten etc. This study shows the British are much more open to trying foreign foods than the perception of a stereotype Brit on tour would have us believe.”

Richard concludes: “That said, as much as I love recommendations from clients, I won’t be rushing off to try sheep’s ball stew!”
