The cost, no airport hassle, and the freedom of the open road – why Brits love caravanning

Research* from caravan insurance specialists Cover4Caravans.co.uk has revealed that caravanning is still a popular pastime, with more than 3 out of 4 Brits (78%) saying they have stayed in - or plan to stay in - a caravan within the coming year.

The study compared results to the same set of questions asked 12 months ago**, to see whether perceptions of caravanning, as well as preferred destinations, have changed.

The survey showed:

  • previously (March 2015), 74% of Brits have stayed, or plan to stay in, a caravan – this figure has increased by 4% in the last year;
  • 16% of people have been to Europe in a caravan in the last year – an 8% increase since March 2015**;
  • the most popular destination for caravanners travelling to mainland Europe is still France, followed by Italy and Spain;
  • Cornwall, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk and Wales were named as favourite UK caravan holiday hot spots;
  • 22% of people were put off caravanning by the perceived cost of a caravan holiday (previously it was 16%);
  • the main reason cited for not going on a caravan holiday were the facilities being too basic (24% compared to 16% a year ago);
  • when asked what they liked best about caravanning, respondents cited “the cost” and “no airport hassle” as equally good reasons (at 50% each) with “the freedom of the open road” attracting 46% of votes.
