Cranfield University teamed up with British Airways to host the second ever Cranfield Aerospace Experience event this week.

Over 950 students from across Europe entered the competition, with four winners selected to experience two days of airborne and simulator flight training at Cranfield’s campus and British Airways Flight Training, Heathrow Airport.

Yesterday the group enjoyed flights in Cranfield University’s Jetstream Flying Laboratory and Scottish Aviation Bulldog aircraft as well as Cranfield’s flight simulator. Today they visited Heathrow Airport, where they flew in the latest Airbus A320 simulator.

The competition winners were Jaime Beneyto Gómez de Barreda and Sergio Gomez Brito from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Polytechnic University of Madrid), Richard D. G. Hickman from Warwick University and Prathiban Sureshkumar from Southampton University.

19-year-old Jaime has loved all things aviation since he was a child. He said: “I saw the posters of the Cranfield experience at my university and I immediately applied. I didn’t think there would be so many resources. I thought there would be a hanger and some planes but Cranfield has an airport and simulators. It has been a very positive experience and I will definitely mention it to friends.”

Neil Godfrey from Cranfield’s School of Engineering said: “Cranfield University offers unrivalled facilities for its postgraduate students, including its own airport and aircraft. Together with British Airways, we were delighted to be able to offer this unique opportunity to experience flying and flight simulation.”

Applications for the 2011 competition will open in October. Details are available at www.aeroexperience.info.
