Cranfield University and the Institute of Clinical Research (ICR) are launching two funded research training fellowships for healthcare research professionals.

The partnership, which currently runs an established MSc in Clinical Research, will extend to award an MSc by Research and PhD opportunity to two successful candidates.

The Junior Fellowship will be a two-year part-time MSc by Research and the Senior Fellowship will be a four-year part-time PhD. Both opportunities are open to professionals already working in the clinical research environment who have perhaps been nurturing a research project. The part-time fellowships will provide support to candidates, enabling them to develop their research with guidance from leading Cranfield staff and external practitioners.

The ICR is the largest professional clinical research body in Europe and India and aims to raise standards, share knowledge and develop professionals within clinical research. The combined strengths of both Cranfield and the ICR ensure the credibility and strong reputation of their existing Clinical Research MSc. Successful fellowship candidates will also benefit from extensive support and expertise from the partnership.

Charles Wainwright, Director of Education for Cranfield Health, said: “These fellowships are an extension of our relationship with the ICR. Working so closely with ICR enables Cranfield to ensure that our courses are covering up to the minute processes and issues within the clinical research area. These fully-funded fellowships will provide excellent opportunities for individuals and their employers alike.”

Janette Benaddi, Chairman of the ICR, said: “Together with our colleagues at Cranfield we hope to make an even greater contribution to the UK’s research base by supporting and offering the highest standards of academic training to our leaders of tomorrow and by providing this opportunity to our brightest and best young talent.”

Applications are invited from ICR members who are healthcare research professionals, clinicians, research nurses or academics. Dr Paul Wathall, Interim Chief Executive Officer at the Institute said: “We expect successful candidates to obtain a post graduate degree and to conduct research which is consistent with the aims of their employer as well as the Institute. Ideally we would also like to see them make a significant contribution through publication and speaking at ICR events.”

The fellowships are due to start next year. Shortlisted candidates for each fellowship will be judged and the awards presented at the ICR’s annual conference next March.

To be considered for one of the posts please visit the Cranfield website: www.cranfield.ac.uk/health/fellowships to apply and find out more. The deadline for applications is Friday 17 December, 2010.
