Recession is Good News for Diners The recession is good news for diners as restaurants are increasingly offering fantastic deals. This is because the British public are now far more price conscious, which has had a knock on effect on their eating habits. A recent Mintel study looking at consumer trends found that 54% of Brits are buying more food on special offers, 36% are trading down and buying more budget and own-brands from supermarkets, and 21% are buying more from discount grocers. The report also found that 51% of Brits say they are eating out less. This means that restaurants are having to compete harder as consumers tighten their belts. The North-West restaurant guide www.onionring.co.uk has discovered that the number of people using their restaurant offers section has more than trebled since this time last year. Daniel Maycock from Onionring says: “With many people feeling the pinch we can see that when people do choose to go out, they are increasingly seeking money saving offers such as 25% off, 2 for 1 deals and the increasingly popular early dining and free wine offers.” “Restaurateurs are getting highly competitive for trade and are offering some great deals, especially midweek and lunchtimes. This is obviously good news for the consumer.” “We are finding that people are increasingly turning to online sites such as ours because they can find all the best offers in one place,” he adds. “This is great news for consumers as they can compare all the best deals.” “We even find that some deals are so good that you couldn't get a supermarket equivalent at the same price! – that's really fantastic news for customers as there's no washing up at the end either!” ENDS NOTE TO EDITORS Mintel report souce: http://www.foodbev.com/report/mintel-reviews-global-consumer-trends-of-2009 Onionring.co.uk: A comprehensive restaurant and venues guide for the North West region.
