Stela - One Year On

It has now been one year since the first Stela LED street light installation. Since that time Indal WRTL are proud to announce that more than 80 local authorities across the UK are now benefiting from the high energy and CO2 savings Stela delivers.

In excess of 10,000 units are currently installed and have accumulated more than 24 million maintenance-free operating hours. Stela’s operating experience increases by more than 3 million hours every month, evidence of its reliability. Independent laboratory testing and real installations show that Stela reduces energy consumption and cuts carbon emissions by up to 68% compared to traditional street lighting. Stela installations are saving more than 50 tonnes of CO2 and 90 megawatt hours of energy per month and as more are completed these savings increase. By the end of 2010, enough electricity will have been saved to power 1000 homes for an entire year. As though these savings are not impressive enough, they will be achieved without dimming or switching off Stela street lights during the night therefore reducing crime, the fear of crime and traffic accidents. It is currently estimated that by the end of 2010 approximately 40,000 Stela street lights will be installed and will be making an annual saving of 2,500 tonnes of CO2, helping achieve Government Climate Change objectives. Stela is manufactured using a large proportion of recycled materials, especially steel and aluminium, and ensures compliance with environmental legislation, which also looks at energy use and impacts of climate change and aims to improve the quality and safety of public spaces. Councillors, local authority climate change policy advisors and highways officials have all commended Stela stating that it has to be “seen to be believed” while Stela continues to attract regular attention from television and radio news programmes and documentaries. WRTL’s Managing Director, Anthony Stubbs commented: “Stela delivers the solution to every environmental target set by the government. There is no other product currently available that can match the savings Stela can deliver. We are all very excited at what has been achieved during the past year and the future potential of this luminaire. Local authorities are under increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions and running costs in the pursuit of a sustainable society and recognise that investing in the future is crucial if savings are to be made over the long-term. “In the knowledge that almost 20% of the planet’s electrical energy is consumed by lighting, Indal WRTL has acted responsibly by investing in the future of our planet and producing a solution that not only delivers significant savings across the board, but is aesthetically impressive.” Indal WRTL would like to thank the local authorities who have chosen Stela as their solution to reducing energy and CO2 emissions.
