Press Release May 2009. The pioneering UK fair trade jewellery company has launched an exciting new venture called CRED Sources (www.credsources.com). This new business represents a significant breakthrough in the transparency and traceability of the gold supply chain. Working with the international fair trade movement, CRED Sources will provide fine gold grain, 18ct yellow and white gold in sheet and wire format to the jewellery trade. Christian Cheesman CRED’s Business Director says ‘We are very excited about this development and the opportunities it presents to the trade and the consumer. We really want the small jewellers, goldsmiths and designer makers to have access to the remarkable developments taking place through the fair trade movement and the social, environmental and transparency revolution that is taking place within our industry”. CRED Sources fair trade programme works with The Fairtrade Labeling Organisation (FLO) and Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and will only sell gold and platinum from mining cooperative’s that are directly working with FLO and ARM. Clara Hidron the CEO of Oro Verde says “CRED has been a long term partner of Oro Verde™ miners; it has believed in their work and sought to support their efforts to protect one of the richest ecosystems in the planet. The creation of CRED Sources will expand the impact. It will allow Oro Verde™ miners to reach more jewellers and consumers who wish to make a difference; people who care about artisanal miners and about the preservation of the Chocó Bioregion, one of the world’s 25 biodiversity hot-spots”. Gold mining is known to be one of the most polluting and environmentally damaging industries in the world and the opening up of a fair trade gold route into the jewellery pipeline will represent a real opportunity for the 100 million global dependents that derive an income from small scale mining.
