Reconomy to supply UK-wide Waste Management services to the National Trust
Reconomy, the UK’s market leader in outsourced waste management and recycling services, has signed a five-year supplier framework agreement with the National Trust. The Waste Management agreement, which applies across National Trust properties, includes general waste, mixed recyclables and glass, wash room services, and ad hoc hazardous waste.
National Trust employs over 5,000 full time staff, has more than 61,000 volunteers, and is an independent charity with over four million members. Its portfolio includes more than 350 houses, gardens, woodlands, monuments, nature reserves and parks; 710 miles (1,141 kilometres) of coastline; and 255,000 hectares (630,000acres) of land, much of it of outstanding natural beauty.
Tamzin Phillips, Waste Advisor for the National Trust, said: “The National Trust has sites in England,Wales and Northern Ireland, including some very remote locations and it was important for us to find a partner with the resources to service such outposts.
“The link between the Trust’s commitment to a local strategy and Reconomy’s drive to use local providers from its extensive pre-approved supply chain is a major benefit. We are confident that our objectives of enhanced sustainability, lower environmental impact and reduced costs will be achieved and we’re already seeing an improved waste service provided by Reconomy.”
In 2008 Reconomy carried out a detailed feasibility study into providing nationwide waste management via local control for the National Trust. Since then Reconomy has built a substantial portfolio of Trust properties culminating in the national framework agreement.
A key objective of the partnership has been for Reconomy to help the National Trust find more cost-effective and long-term waste management while making sure that any waste disposal fulfils legal requirements.
As well as looking to reduce overall spend on waste, Reconomy had to demonstrate reliable and accurate, real-time reporting to ensure local managers had efficient control on a daily basis. Reconomy provides this via its unique on-line Portal which provides real-time data on all waste categories, including amounts removed from site, processing, and individual and overall costs.
Reconomy will report, via the Portal, to National Trust personnel on waste streams, percentage of waste recycled, percentage diverted from landfill etc., on a regional and national level and over time this information will feed into an Environmental Management System.
