Current Analysis’ Q2 2012 Data Center and Cloud Services Market Update Now Available

Sterling, VA, USA, June 5, 2012 – Current Analysis, the market leader in continuous, tactical competitive intelligence for the telecommunications and information technology markets, today announced the release of the company’s latest Advisory Report on the Data Center and Cloud Services market for the second quarter of 2012.

This report examines the state of the global data center and cloud services sector, highlighting how top enterprise data center providers are stepping up with more flexible and innovative solutions, as well as what challenges they face as the market dynamics continue to shift to more on-demand consumption models. Advances in virtualization technology fuel many data center optimization efforts through projects such as server consolidation that reduce data center footprints and support increased energy efficiency.  Virtualization also provides the technology foundation for cloud computing that alters how enterprises and SMEs consume IT.

“Streamlining data center operations is not a new concept, but with the advent of cloud computing, virtualization and the myriad of security issues, timely, new intelligence is invaluable to organizations,” commented Tim Dowd, CEO of Current Analysis.  “Current Analysis will continuously analyze the changing marketplace and provide guidance on where and how companies should focus their efforts.”

In this Advisory Report, Amy DeCarlo, Principal Analyst for Security and Data Center Services, features solutions from a number of providers, including Amazon Web Services, AT&T, BT Global Services, CSC, HP, IBM, Rackspace, Savvis, T-Systems, and Terremark. Key highlights include the following:

  • While cloud dominates market discussions, the majority of enterprise IT needs are still met through more traditional avenues. In Current Analysis’ 2011 Survey on North American Cloud adoption, 89% of U.S. enterprises surveyed said 20% or less of their IT needs are met through the cloud.
  • Virtualization is the real transformation engine in data center solutions today. Corporate concerns about stability, security, privacy, and loss of control are significant enough for large enterprises to put off a major move into the cloud.  However, they are still looking for many of the benefits of the cloud from other data center services and virtualization solutions, which are not technically cloud offers, but can deliver many of these attributes.
  • While the public sector isn’t always known for its place on the leading edge of technology adoption, government cloud mandates may compel the public sector to become a first mover in on-demand services.
  • Amazon Web Services is the market-maker for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and is likely the first $1 billion provider of IaaS solutions.  However, corporate clients are looking for more depth and range from their providers.

Ms. DeCarlo stated, “IBM Global Services earns its leadership status by demonstrating consistent strength across a range of functional areas in the data center, including both physical and virtual server hosting, on-demand computing, and managed application services.  The provider reinforces the stability of its solutions with a resilient data center infrastructure and the security protections to reassure some of the world’s most exacting customers.”
