A new interface offers efficient PC-based service and maintenance for mobile terminals at points of sale, in the supply chain and any other possible service locations.

The mobile phone manufacturers Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericsson have today announced an initiative for an open service interface, called Open Mobile Service Interface (OMSI). Based on Web service technologies, OMSI is a communication interface between the service application and manufacturer plug-ins on the service/maintenance PC, and it is independent of the connection or connector used between the PC and phone. The purpose of OMSI is to enable one single PC application to perform services and maintenance for any manufacturer’s phones. It simplifies services and maintenance for mobile terminals at points of sale, in the supply chain and any other possible service location. The services can be software updates, diagnostics, device tests and user setting configurations. Other mobile phone manufacturers as well as operators, application providers and other industry players are invited to join the OMSI effort (see www.omsi-forum.org). OMSI is administrated by Cybercom, which has developed the first solution implementation together with the three manufacturers. OMSI offers business opportunities and attractive servicing and housekeeping for operators as well as product opportunities for service application providers.
