HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES TAKE TO TWO WHEELS FOR WEE JAUNT

Over 1000 people took part in Cycling Scotland’s Wee Jaunt Glasgow bike ride, part of Pedal for Scotland – Scotland’s biggest bike event

Around 1000 people showed their pedal power today (5 Sept) as they took part in the Wee Jaunt Glasgow bike ride, organised by Cycling Scotland.

Derek Mackay, Minister for Transport and Islands, joined several hundred families at the start line this morning in Glasgow Green. The Clan stunt team were also on hand to wave off the riders.

The Wee Jaunt sees people of all ages and abilities pedal their way round the 6 mile traffic free route, starting in Glasgow Green and passing the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome before finishing back at the Green to soak up entertainment from The Clan and, for younger members, to try out balance bikes with Play on Pedals, the project giving every pre-school child in Glasgow the opportunity to learn to ride a bike.

The Wee Jaunt is part of Pedal for Scotland, which will see over 10,000 people take to two wheels across six rides. Now in its 17th year, Pedal for Scotland sees thousands of riders take part in the 50 mile Classic Challenge from Glasgow to Edinburgh, and around 600  riders on the 110 mile Big Belter, which takes a different route through the Southern Uplands.

In addition, around 1000 riders are expected to take part across Wee Jaunt Edinburgh, Wee Jaunt Murrayfield tomorrow (6 Sept) and Wee Jaunt Aberdeen (13 Sept).

Many participants were raising money for children and young people affected by poverty by supporting the event’s charity partner, The STV Children’s Appeal.

Derek Mackay, Minister for Transport and Islands said: “It’s great to see so many families taking part in the Wee Jaunt Glasgow, one of six rides just like this, and the Scottish Government are delighted to support this. 

“It is vital all ages can participate in physical activity and this, the biggest mass participation bike ride in the country, is just one of the ways we can get kids excited about cycling as this is a great way to improve health and well-being.   Pedal for Scotland caters for everyone, and I hope those taking part this year have a fun time with their families and friends, and continue to cycle as an everyday part of their lives.”

All Pedal for Scotland events are organised by Cycling Scotland with funding from Transport Scotland and with support from our partners and sponsors.
