DANISCO'S SUGAR PRODUCTION 2001 Prospects for a sugar production slightly higher than previously anticipated This year's second field samples of beets made on 3 September in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Finland and Lithuania showed the following results: Tonnes beet per % sugar in beet Tonnes sugar per ha ha Denmark 58.7 (50.0) 14.9 (16.5) 8.77 (8.27) Sweden 52.7 (42.5) 14.9 (16.3) 7.87 (6.93) Germany 56.7 (55.4) 15.0 (15.8) 8.51 (8.80) Finland 35.9 (31.2) 14.7 (15.6) 5.27 (4.85) Lithuani 43.0 (35.3) 13.7 (15.0) 5.91 (5.28) a The average of the last five years is shown in brackets. At this stage Danisco Sugar expects an overall production well above the quotas specified by the EU, but lower than the record production of recent years. With the currently favourable weather conditions continuing during the rest of the growing period, there is potential for a total sugar production in 2001 well above the quotas specified by the EU for Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Finland of 1,060,500 tonnes in total, but lower than record production of recent years (production in 1998: approx 1,202,000 tonnes, in 1999: approx 1,294,000 tonnes, and in 2000: approx 1,240,000 tonnes). Since this year's first field samples of beets made on 6 August, weather conditions have been particularly favourable for beet development and the potential for the year's sugar production is fully satisfactory. In Denmark, the beets have grown a great deal during the past month and under normal growth conditions it is expected that the year's acreage yield will be at least at the level of a normal year and that production will be somewhat higher than the EU quota of 420,700 tonnes (production in 1998: approx. 531,000 tonnes, in 1999: approx. 552,000 tonnes, in 2000: approx. 533,000 tonnes). In Sweden, growth has also been greater than normal during the past month and under normal growth conditions it is expected that the year's sugar production will be well above the EU quota of 368,300 tonnes (production in 1998: approx. 399,000 tonnes, in 1999: approx. 430,000 tonnes, in 2000: approx. 412,000 tonnes). In Germany, the beets are normally developed and under normal growth conditions it is expected that this year's sugar production will also exceed the EU quota of 125,400 tonnes (production in 1998: approx. 152,000 tonnes, in 1999: approx. 145,000 tonnes, in 2000: approx. 142,000 tonnes). In Finland, the beets are also normally developed and the potential for this year's sugar production is on a par with the EU quota of 146,100 tonnes (production in 1998: approx. 120, 000 tonnes, in 1999: approx. 166,000 tonnes, in 2000: approx. 153,000 tonnes). Any deviation is expected to be covered by transferred C sugar. In Lithuania, growth conditions have been favourable and production is expected to be on a par with or slightly higher than the factory's sugar quota of 90,000 tonnes in total. The dates for the campaign start at the local factories can be seen in the enclosed table.
