The British Council has announced details of Atlas of the Unbuilt World, an international exhibition for the London Festival of Architecture 2013 that will open at the Bartlett School of Architecture, Royal Ear Hospital, on 7 June. The exhibition will showcase architectural models of future projects from around the globe by some of the most by exciting practices and emerging studios working today.

Atlas of the Unbuilt World will provide a snap-shot of the future of architecture hosting over 60 models, from 40 countries. The projects have been nominated by international experts including architects, academics and writers and representatives from London’s embassies and cultural institutes.

From Denmark there are two models showcasing new infrastructure and health care architecture.

Nørreport Station, Copenhagen, Denmark - COBE & Gottlieb Paludan Architects

This project is situated in the heart of Copenhagen – and is the busiest station in Denmark. Roughly 250.000 people are passing through this area every day either by walking, cycling, taking the train or the metro.

The new station will be an open, cohesive space with clear and easily accessible facilities, created by your footsteps. A study of pedestrians’ preferred routes at Nørreport has formed the basis for the station’s new welcoming design creating street life, seating, shops, outdoor eating – and a good flow across the square. Bicycle parking is distributed over the entire space in small “islands”, which are lowered by 30-40cm clearly marking the designated areas. The new buildings are open on all sides, and covered by one large organically shaped roof which will be covered with greenery, which are able to absorb rain water after heavy rain.

The New University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark - C.F. Møller (part of DNU Consortium)

The largest hospital construction project in the history of Denmark, the New University Hospital in Aarhus, will be built onto the existing Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby, to form a single hospital complex. The resulting New University Hospital will be the size of a Danish provincial town.

The giant hospital complex is also organised like a town with hierarchy of neighbourhoods, streets and squares which provide the foundation for a diverse and dynamic ‘green’ urban area. The complex is not merely a construction project, but also a cultural project, involving many different branches of science and art. The hospital is intended to function both as a university hospital, a regional centre and a basic treatment hospital for citizens of the region, and has been designed to flexibly accommodate future developments in technology, treatment and working practices. The programme and design for the New University Hospital in Aarhus focuses on healing architecture, taking its starting-point in Evidence-Based Design.
