Headliners for Vinterjazz 2012 include Joshua Redman, Lezdek Mozdzer, Jack DeJohnette and many others

Most of the program for Denmark’s nationwide Vinterjazz Festival - featuring more than 60 venues - is now in place.  A strong field of leading international and Danish artists includes: Joshua Redman Trio (US), Bobo Stenson (SE), Leszek Mozdzer (PL), Jakob Bro feat. Peter Laugesen, Chris Speed, Nicolai Munch-Hansen & Jim Black (DK/US), DR Big Band "Portrait Of NHØP" (DK), Eivør & Ginman "After Dark" (FO/DK) and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings (US). 

The prominent American saxophonist, Joshua Redman, and his trio with Reuben Rogers and Greg Hutchinson is returning to Copenhagen to perform at Koncerthuset Studie 2.

Two, great evenings with solo pianists are in store in Den Sorte Diamant at The Royal Library. Swedish pianist Bobo Stenson - known for his long-time engagement with ECM Records, among other things – is giving a concert on February 4, while the Polish super-pianist, Leszek Mozdzer, is the star of a unique concert evening on February 11, featuring the music of soundtrack composer Krzysztof Komeda (1931-1969), who, among other things, set his stamp on Roman Polanski’s films of the 1960s.

Critically acclaimed Danish guitarist and composer Jakob Bro is topical with the album, Time, but is touring Denmark with a new group consisting of his two, new American collaborator-friends, saxophonist Chris Speed and drummer Jim Black, plus bassist Nicolai Munch-Hansen and poet Peter Laugesen, who will recite passages of his poetry to musical accompaniment. The music is written by Jakob Bro especially for the Vinterjazz concerts.

Other Highlights During Vinterjazz:

Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen is the first name that comes to mind in terms of a Danish, international jazz star. For years he was the house bass player at Jazzhus Montmartre on Store Regnegade, and in 1964 – at the age of 18 – became the first bassist in the newly established Danish Radio Big Band.

Composer and pianist Anders Koppel has had a musical career spanning 50 years, an event that will be celebrated during Vinterjazz at Prøvehallen, where he is artist in residence.

The Copenhagen Jazz Festival Honorary Award is an international honorary prize that pays tribute to two, specially chosen musicians, where each - in his or her progressive style - has represented modern jazz for the better part of a generation. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival Honorary Award is given to trumpet player/composer Palle Mikkelborg and American drummer/composer Jack DeJohnette - both of them will perform at the show.

Vinterjazz 2012 is also featuring the special premier of “After Dark”, a new, exciting collaboration between vocalist Eivør and contrabassist Lennart Ginman. While rooted in acoustic jazz, the band also employs small, electronic elements that carry on the jazz tradition in an evocative and lyrical contemporary expression.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are synonymous with soul of the deepest, most fervent kind. The band recently released its fifth album, Soul-Time!, which received 5 stars in the national daily newspaper, Politiken.
