PRESS RELEASE, FEBRUARY 8 - 2012

This week, BOZAR, the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, will open a major exhibition of the internationally-acclaimed Danish artist, Per Kirkeby. This retrospective presents a variety of aspects of the Danish artist's considerable oeuvre. The exhibition also takes a look at the little-known realistic landscape paintings of the German avant-garde artist Kurt Schwitters. Denmark’s Minister for Culture, Uffe Elbaek, will open the exhibition.

Widely acclaimed as a painter, sculptor, filmmaker, and writer, Per Kirkeby has pursued an independent and unique artistic path over the past forty years. The ambitious retrospective at BOZAR will offer a representative sample of Per Kirkeby's extensive oeuvre with a particular focus on his painting. More than 180 works will be presented chronologically and thematically, allowing the visitor to appreciate the essence of Kirkeby's vision of art. His artistic world will be able to be explored through a mix of known and never or rarely shown works, right up to his most recent work.

Exhibition period: 10 February - 20 May 2012

The Per Kirkeby retrospective is at the heart of a diverse programme at BOZAR focusing on Denmark during the Danish presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Danish programme includes exhibitions, film, architecture, literature, music, and workshops for children.

Danish Minister for Culture Uffe Elbaek says:
“We need to focus and nurture our creativity, our cultural diversity, and our cultural strengths to make a better Europe – perhaps, even a better world. Per Kirkeby is an outstanding and important artist – an artist who has always been active beyond national borders and has taken inspiration from all over the world. Good art has resulted from this global outlook. It is an important way to think and act.”

The exhibition is curated by Prof. Siegfried Gohr in collaboration with the Michael Werner Gallery, Märkisch Wilmersdorf, Cologne, and New York.
